Edwidge Danticat gathers nine linked stories about Haitian women living under dictatorship, poverty and displacement, and about the daughters who inherit their histories from afar.

The title comes from the call-and-response of Haitian oral storytelling: the teller asks Krik?, the listeners answer Krak!, and a story becomes communal property. Danticat uses that structure to let voices echo across generations, between Haiti and the United States, and between those who survived and those who disappeared.

The collection moves from political imprisonment and the dangerous sea crossing toward Florida to domestic life among Haitian immigrants in New York. Mothers, daughters, lovers and exiles recur without quite forming a continuous narrative; instead, each story alters the meaning of the others. Danticat writes with remarkable clarity, allowing folklore, ritual and lyrical imagery into prose that never disguises the material violence surrounding its characters.

First published in 1995 and shortlisted for the National Book Award, Krik? Krak! established Danticat as one of the essential writers of the Haitian diaspora.
