Description of 'Magda' by Meike Ziervogel

The imagined the interior life of Magda Goebbels, wife of Joseph Goebbels and one of the Third Reich's most notorious figures, who murdered her six children before taking her own life in Hitler's Berlin bunker.

Meike Ziervogel constructs a fragmented psychological portrait that moves backwards through Magda's life, exploring childhood, motherhood, ideology, abuse and the slow construction of fanaticism. The novel asks not how to excuse evil, but how it becomes inhabitable.

Originally published in English in 2013, Magda was shortlisted for the Walter Scott Prize and won the English PEN Award. Ziervogel, herself German-born, writes with striking restraint, refusing easy moral certainties while examining the intersections of private trauma and political extremism. The result sits somewhere between literary fiction, psychological biography and historical inquiry, making it compelling reading for those interested in the legacy of fascism, inherited violence and the uneasy relationship between history and imagination.

2013 Salt Publishing paperback, warmly inscribed and signed by the author on the title page. Very good condition with light shelf wear, clean pages and a firm binding.
