Meike Ziervogel constructs a fragmented psychological portrait that moves backwards through Magda's life, exploring childhood, motherhood, ideology, abuse and the slow construction of fanaticism. The novel asks not how to excuse evil, but how it becomes inhabitable.

Originally published in English in 2013, Magda was shortlisted for the Walter Scott Prize and won the English PEN Award.
