Description of 'Making Chó Bò Lâm Trouble' by James Nguyen

Artist James Nguyen uses family history as a way into questions of migration, inheritance, queerness and racism, growing out of Nguyen’s practice-based research and his experience within the Vietnamese-Australian diaspora.

Nguyen looks at family as something continuously made and remade: through displacement, translation, conflict, care and inherited stories. The book ranges through queer and trans histories, refugee experience, racial violence and colonial structures while also asking what artistic research can do with forms of knowledge that institutions tend to flatten or exclude. Dense but unusually intimate for an artist-research publication, it sits somewhere between memoir, cultural criticism, archive and practice-led theory.

Discipline, Naarm/Melbourne, 2023. First edition. Edition of 400 copies. Paperback with French flaps. Edited by Helen Hughes and Amy May Stuart; foreword by Brian Martin; designed by Zenobia Ahmed. Minor rubbing and handling marks to covers, with light edge wear; internally clean and unmarked, binding firm. Very good condition.
