‘Manhunt’ by B. Wongar

Written during the Vietnam War but not published until 2008, Manhunt is a novel concerned with colonial violence, dispossession and the relationship between Aboriginal people and the Australian state.
Through the experiences of Dao and his encounters with people living under conditions of confinement and exploitation, B. Wongar examines a society organised around racial hierarchies, where freedom of movement, access to resources and even the right to exist are unequally distributed.
The novel combines political criticism with an often unsettling, darkly comic narrative sensibility. Wongar's descriptions of ordinary encounters reveal the absurdities and cruelties of colonial administration, while questions of surveillance, resistance and survival run beneath the story. In an author's note, Wongar recounts how the manuscript was taken from him decades earlier and subsequently recovered and restored for publication. Its history is inseparable from the wider controversy surrounding his writing about Aboriginal dispossession, nuclear testing and the destruction of Indigenous communities in Australia.
