Description of 'màthair beinn' by Eartha Davis

A striking debut collection that moves between Scotland and Australia, màthair beinn ("mother mountain" in Scottish Gaelic) explores inheritance, language, landscape and grief through poems that feel simultaneously ancient and contemporary.

Eartha Davis writes in compressed, musical lines where bodies become mountains, birds carry memory, and language itself seems to fracture and reform around loss. Gaelic appears throughout not as ornament but as another emotional register, drawing questions of ancestry and place directly into the texture of the poems.

Published by Vagabond Press in 2025, this is an accomplished first collection from a poet attentive to sound, silence and the physical world. Readers of Judith Beveridge, Evelyn Araluen, Alice Oswald or Kathleen Jamie will find much to admire here, particularly its ability to make landscape feel less like setting than a living participant in memory and becoming.

First edition paperback, Vagabond Press, 2025. Very good condition with minimal signs of handling. Clean throughout with a firm binding.
