'Modern Man' by Joan Salter

A curious and genuinely scarce piece of Australian anthroposophical publishing, Modern Man is Joan Salter's literary engagement with the spiritual philosophy of Rudolf Steiner.
Salter writes through his work, producing a sequence of essays, reflections and prose meditations on selfhood, consciousness, moral responsibility and the relationship between matter and spirit. Themes such as "You Are I Am" and "A Thinking Matter" sit alongside Margaret Lewis' striking illustrations, giving the book the feeling of an artist's manifesto as much as a work of spiritual philosophy.
Published in Melbourne in 1979 by the small independent Spectrum Publications, the book belongs to a distinctly Australian strand of anthroposophical writing that never achieved wide circulation outside Waldorf and Steiner communities. Salter, later known for her work in anthroposophical child development and maternal health, approaches Steiner's ideas with unusual warmth and accessibility, making this an engaging artefact for readers interested in alternative spiritual traditions, esoteric philosophy, or the overlooked history of Australian countercultural publishing.
First edition, first printing. Published by Spectrum Publications Pty Ltd, Richmond, Victoria, 1979. Very good condition. Light rubbing and handling wear to the wraps with minor creasing to the corners. Binding remains sound and the pages are clean throughout.
