Description of ‘Nineteenth-Century Contexts: An Interdisciplinary Journal, Vol. 18, No. 1 — Special Issue: Colonialisms’

This 1994 special issue of Nineteenth-Century Contexts gathers a rich set of essays on colonialism, literary history, nationalism, gender and postcolonial criticism.

The issue moves across different sites of imperial formation and their aftermaths: historiography, women and nation-building in Latin America, nineteenth-century travel writing in the West Indies, Irish writing, and the role of the postcolonial critic.

John M. MacKenzie writes on Edward Said and historical method; Mary Louise Pratt examines women, literature and national brotherhood; Simon Gikandi reads Englishness and travel through the West Indies; Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak appears in interview on the function of postcolonial criticism; and Seamus Deane considers territorial and extraterritorial moments in Irish writing. The reviews section extends the discussion through work by Said, Nicholas B. Dirks, Laura E. Donaldson, Julia V. Emberley and Moira Ferguson. A very good snapshot of postcolonial and interdisciplinary literary debate in the 1990s, especially where history, criticism and empire start arguing with one another.

Gordon and Breach Publishers, Switzerland, 1994. Nineteenth-Century Contexts, Vol. 18, No. 1. Paperback journal issue. Light shelf and edge wear; internally clean and sound. Very good condition.
