North of the Border gathers the lives and memories of lesbian women who lived through enormous social and political change in Queensland, particularly during and after the deeply conservative Bjelke-Petersen years. 

The women speak in their own voices about childhood, sexuality, relationships, migration, work and community, alongside the particular strangeness of queer life in a state where male homosexuality remained criminalised until 1991 and discrimination was embedded in both law and everyday culture. There's no singular history, it is a constellation of voices and faces; political organisers sit alongside people whose lives became political almost accidentally, and personal recollection continually rubs against the larger machinery of law, religion, family and place.

Faulkner’s contemporary portraits and participants’ own historical photographs run throughout, making this as much a visual archive as an oral one — intimate, local and unusually valuable Australian queer history.
