‘Not There Nor Here’ by Superimposition (Quan)

Not There Nor Here is stunning. A photobook, a concrete poem and dérive.
It's a sequence of suburban and industrial surfaces, fragments of signage, corrugated walls, vacant edges and typographic interruptions that turns the built environment into a kind of sentence. I love the idea of the world inside this book having a form in type. The photographs are material to be cut against language — words stretch, break, collide with architecture, or seem to have been pulled directly from the visual field.
There is a deliberately liminal quality to the book’s attention. It keeps returning to the almost-place: service lanes, fences, blank walls, industrial lots, things half-seen from a moving car or train. Quan lets them remain provisional, estranged and absurd. The result is a small artist’s book about perception, non-place and the way language colonises what we see, while images quietly resist being reduced to explanation.
