‘One to One’ by Ramona Koval

Drawn from conversations conducted by Australian broadcaster and literary interviewer Ramona Koval, this gathers an eclectic group of writers, artists, filmmakers and public figures.
Published in 1992, the collection includes exchanges with Germaine Greer, Hanif Kureishi, Fred Schepisi, Elizabeth Jolley, Fay Weldon, Marcel Marceau, Pio, Robyn Archer, Fay Zwicky, Les Murray and Bob Geldof, among others.
The conversations move between creative practice, politics, family history, cultural identity and the relationship between private experience and public work. We have Greer reflecting on the distance between autobiographical intention and what readers believe they have encountered, or Schepisi considering the unconscious impulses that shape artistic decisions. Koval's approach makes room for digression and disagreement, preserving something of the spontaneity of spoken exchange rather than forcing her subjects into tidy portraits. A revealing document of Australian cultural life in the early 1990s, and of the interview as a form capable of producing ideas rather than simply extracting information.
