Lesléa Newman brings a wonderfully irreverent sense of humour to lesbian life; following a woman who knows what she wants, except, occasionally, when she doesn't.

At the centre of several stories is the narrator's relationship with Flash, her considerably more practical partner, whose patience is regularly tested by shopping obsessions, emotional spirals and the narrator's determination to turn minor domestic incidents into full-scale productions. Elsewhere, questions of motherhood, femme and butch identities, consumer culture and the contradictions of lesbian respectability are approached with affectionate satire and considerable self-awareness.

Originally published in 1997 by Alyson Publications, Out of the Closet and Nothing to Wear belongs to a lively period of lesbian writing that refused to make queer existence exclusively a matter of struggle or political explanation. Newman is interested in the ridiculousness of ordinary life, the pleasure of exaggeration and the possibility of laughing at ourselves without surrendering the seriousness of who we are. A charming, sharp and distinctly nineties collection of queer comic fiction.
