‘Prairie, Dresses, Art, Other’ by Danielle Dutton

In Prairie, Dresses, Art, Other, Danielle Dutton assembles fiction, essays, criticism and experiments in form that move between literature, visual art, fashion and domestic life.
The collection includes meditations on writers and artists, among them Leonora Carrington, Barbara Guest and Christine de Pizan, alongside pieces that resist easy distinctions between observation, biography and invention.
Dutton is particularly interested in the relationship between artistic form and the conditions in which art is produced, and how women have been represented, how they have represented themselves, and how creative work might escape the categories imposed upon it. Her writing is playful without being casual, combining close attention to objects and images with an interest in the strangeness of everyday experience. The collection's movement between genres becomes part of its argument, questioning why certain ways of writing, making and thinking are treated as separate activities.
