This is not a neat standalone novel so much as the final chamber of a strange literary house. Best for readers already interested in Durrell, twentieth-century modernist excess, European postwar fiction, or books that treat plot as a door that may or may not open onto sex, memory, theology, and someone muttering about the Templars in the next room.
