Description of 'Sanlundia' by Z. T. Quinn

Drawing on Quinn’s six months working with asylum seekers on Manus Island, Sanlundia examines how institutional violence becomes dispersed through contractors, acronyms and chains of command.

Maggie arrives on the remote island of Sanlundia to work inside an offshore detention centre: a closed world of indifferent guards, absurd managers, evasive bureaucracies and people trapped indefinitely within them. When she becomes determined to expose what is happening, she disappears, leaving a journalist to investigate both her fate and the machinery surrounding the camp. Published in 2018 amid heightened scrutiny of Australia’s offshore detention regime, it is fiction written from a worker’s perspective rather than testimony by a detained person, with its sharpest attention directed towards complicity, moral injury and bureaucratic cruelty.
