In The Binding Vine, Shashi Deshpande works through grief, female friendship, motherhood, sexual violence, marriage, memory and the buried lives of women inside family structures.
The novel follows Urmi, grieving the death of her infant daughter, as she becomes drawn into the lives and writings of other women: a young woman in hospital after rape, and a dead mother-in-law whose poems reveal a self that domestic life had failed to fully contain. It is very much a book about what women know, what they are allowed to say, and what gets smothered politely under the household linen.
Deshpande has that excellent domestic knife quality: no melodrama, no grand thunder, just small rooms, old silences, generational injury, and the slow recognition that what looks like family history is often an archive of containment. The novel is especially strong on female interiority, grief after motherhood, friendship as witness, and the way patriarchal violence is not always spectacular.
A strong one for readers of Indian literature, feminist fiction, postcolonial writing, domestic psychological novels, motherhood narratives, and writers like Anita Desai, Kamala Markandaya, Bapsi Sidhwa, or if someone wants the quieter, more relational end of the shelf.
