'The Dalkey Archive' by Flann O'Brien

A gleeful collision of theology, philosophy, science fiction and Irish absurdity.
Published posthumously in 1964, The Dalkey Archive is one of Flann O'Brien's great comic novels., Set around the Dublin suburb of Dalkey, it follows Mick Shaughnessy as he encounters the eccentric scientist De Selby, who believes he can end the world by removing oxygen from the atmosphere, alongside an unexpectedly retired James Joyce and a remarkably conversational Saint Augustine. Like O'Brien's best work, the novel constantly slips between the plausible and the preposterous without ever changing tone.
Although often overshadowed by The Third Policeman and At Swim-Two-Birds, The Dalkey Archive rewards readers who enjoy fiction that treats metaphysical speculation as an excuse for comedy. O'Brien's dialogue is razor-sharp, his philosophical debates become farce, and everyday Irish life is quietly transformed into something uncanny. Beneath the jokes lies a sustained meditation on belief, identity and reality, making it a natural recommendation for readers of Beckett, Borges or early Pynchon.
