Autumn Royal’s The Drama Student treats emotional life as something staged, through poems that move through mourning, intimacy, artistic ambition and bodily vulnerability with an acute awareness that expression is never innocent.

Myth, visual art and dramatic convention sit beside beds, carpets, fluids, flowers and other intimate matter; the elevated and the faintly grotesque continually contaminate one another. The collection’s central tension lies between candour and artifice—not whether performance conceals authentic feeling, but whether performance may be the only form through which feeling becomes legible at all.

There is real grief here, but little obedient solemnity. Royal allows mourning to become vain, erotic, comic, melodramatic and strange: a form of consciousness that watches itself from the wings while still undergoing the scene. A sharp collection for readers drawn to poetry about embodiment, performance, loss and the uneasy theatre of making a self. The book was shortlisted for both the 2023 Judith Wright Calanthe Award and the 2024 Prime Minister’s Literary Award for Poetry.
