Set over several days in 1949, The First Circle takes place inside a sharashka: a prison research institute where scientists, engineers and intellectuals work for Stalin’s security apparatus.

The prisoners are spared the physical extremity of the labour camps, but comfort only refines the moral trap. They must decide how much of their intelligence, loyalty and conscience they will surrender to a system that has already taken their freedom. The title invokes Dante’s first circle of Hell—a comparatively mild realm that remains Hell nonetheless. 

Drawing on Solzhenitsyn’s own imprisonment in a sharashka, the novel combines political argument, institutional detail and a large cast in the tradition of the nineteenth-century Russian novel. It is particularly sharp on compromise: the incremental bargains through which people become collaborators, dissidents or merely survivors. This edition contains the shortened version Solzhenitsyn prepared in the hope of passing Soviet censorship; the restored 96-chapter text was not published in English until decades later. Even in this reduced form, it remains one of his most complex fictional studies of Stalinism—not merely as terror imposed from above, but as a system that enters speech, friendship and private judgment.
