Juan Gabriel Vásquez’s The Shape of the Ruins is a great paranoid historical machine, meditating on what a country does with its dead.
Beginning with the assassination of Colombian political leader Jorge Eliécer Gaitán in 1948, Vásquez follows the unstable afterlife of political violence: bones, bullets, photographs, rumours, official stories, private obsessions, and the seductive pull of believing that somewhere, beneath the wreckage, there must be a hidden structure.
It is a novel about Colombia, but also about the broader twentieth-century fever of explanation: the need to connect one wound to another, to make history legible, to find the hand behind catastrophe. Vásquez is very good on how conspiracy can be both ridiculous and ethically serious — delusional, yes, but also born from real state violence, real omissions, real archives full of gaps. For readers of Bolaño, Sebald, Javier Marías, Labatut, Piglia, political fiction, archival novels, and literary works that make history feel like a locked room with too many keys.
