A collection of rare, previously unpublished and experimental writings by Ann Quin, one of the more radical figures of postwar British fiction.

Edited and introduced by Jennifer Hodgson, The Unmapped Country gathers stories, prose fragments and unfinished work spanning Quin's career, revealing a writer continually dismantling the conventions of narrative, identity and psychological realism.

There's everything we want. Unsettling domestic scenes, fractured interior monologues, dark humour and formal experimentation, these pieces explore estrangement, sexuality, mental illness and the instability of perception. In ‘A Double Room’, ordinary interactions become charged with suspicion and desire; ‘Nude and Seascape’ examines the troubled relationship between artistic representation and lived experience. The title work, an unfinished novella, follows a woman's disintegrating sense of reality, where language, memory and experience become increasingly difficult to separate. Throughout, Quin's prose shifts between remarkable precision and deliberate disorientation, resisting the expectation that a story must resolve itself into something coherent.
