The Way Opens is an illustrated anthology and school-era collection, in which Chaucer sits beside Lewis Carroll, comic ballads, anonymous traditional material and other short pieces designed to be read aloud as much as silently.

The title is broad enough to sound philosophical, but it's all pleasure with riddles, reversals, boastful fools, talking animals, tricksters, improbable encounters  and many a compact narrative. Kiddell-Monroe’s black-and-red decorations thread through the pages as part of the reading experience rather than as incidental illustration, making it a curious little bridge between children’s literature, folklore, comic verse and mid-century book design, with a distinctly tactile period presence.
