'Thesis Eleven, Number 16: Agnes Heller — Modernity & Democratic Utopia' edited by the Thesis Eleven collective

A 1987 issue of the Australian socialist theory journal Thesis Eleven, centred substantially on the work of Hungarian philosopher Ágnes Heller.
Though Marxism was Heller, through and through, it remains open to questions that she made more generally in her later work. These questions circled human needs, freedom, happiness, rationality, plurality, modernity and the possibilities of utopian thought without political inevitability.
Beyond Heller, essays within address post-Marxist radicalism, critical theory, Australian radical nationalism, analytical Marxism and communication, alongside a review essay on Foucault’s History of Sexuality. There is also work engaging Laclau and Mouffe, Cornelius Castoriadis and contemporary socialist debates. It becomes a more holistic document, about how to preserve the emancipatory ambitions of Marxist thought once necessity, historical destiny and the fantasy of a single social order have become difficult to defend. A strong piece of Australian intellectual-history ephemera as much as a philosophy journal.
