A weird relic of the education system that is doing some serious work in the aesthetics department.
A 1968 poetry teaching anthology from English Universities Press, edited by M. G. and P. Benton, bringing together ballads, lyric poems, children’s verse, modern poetry, photographs, questions, close-reading prompts and classroom exercises. Inside are poems arranged as objects to be looked at, heard, interpreted and worried over — with pages moving between traditional verse, sparse modernist fragments, photographic spreads, and old-school classroom questions that now read almost like found poetry.
Includes pieces such as The Tale of Custard the Dragon, folk ballad material, short lyric poems, and sections built around image, sound, rhythm and attention. A good one for poetry readers, teachers, visual-text people, and anyone with a weakness for educational books that accidentally became design objects.
Hardback, first printed 1968. Edited by M. G. Benton and P. Benton; English Universities Press, printed in England by Cox & Wyman. Light rubbing and shelf wear to boards, with some corner/edge wear; internally clean and readable, with strong black-and-white photographic and typographic material throughout.
