'When Pictures Whisper Stories' by Pat Hoffie

Published in conjunction with Pat Hoffie’s exhibition at the Museum of Brisbane, When Pictures Whisper Stories is an illustrated artist’s book and catalogue concerned with how images carry history beneath their visible surfaces.
The book combines reproductions, archival material, drawing and reflective text, allowing visual and written forms to interrupt one another rather than settle into straightforward documentation. Its strongest passages attend to places such as the Old Windmill, where picturesque familiarity is forced back into contact with colonial violence and First Nations resistance.
The result is both local and methodological: a study of how looking can become historical inquiry, and how apparently ordinary images begin to speak once their silences are taken seriously. For readers interested in contemporary Australian art, Brisbane history, visual culture and the politics of place.
