Exley writes himself as both subject and suspect — obsessive, funny, self-pitying, savage, strangely lucid — turning fandom into a theology for people who have lost access to ordinary belief.

Nominally orbiting the New York Giants and Frank Gifford, A Fan’s Notes is really about the wreckage of identification: what happens when another man’s public glory becomes the container for your own private emptiness. Brutal, comic, humiliating, and oddly tender, it remains a key work of American autofiction before the term got polished into something that could be safely discussed at dinner.
