These essays move through patients who experience the world in radically altered ways: loss of colour, fractured perception, sudden savant abilities, memory gaps that reshape identity. But as is his way, he treats each condition as a different mode of being, something to be understood on its own terms rather than corrected or flattened back into “normal.”

Through the pages, you stop thinking of the brain as a stable thing and start seeing it as contingent, improvisational, capable of reorganising itself into entirely different realities. It’s science writing, but it reads closer to philosophy—about perception, selfhood, and how thin the line is between coherence and something else entirely.
