Foster is a small book that operates by accumulation rather than plot.

A young girl is sent away from her crowded, emotionally negligent home to spend a summer with distant relatives. What happens there is almost nothing — and everything. Meals are cooked properly. Silence is respected. Kindness appears without explanation or demand.

Keegan writes in clean lines, withholding sentiment until it lands with devastating precision. What a child notices when care is suddenly present, and what becomes visible when it is later withdrawn, becomes very apparent. 

Often described as “quiet,” Foster is more accurately disciplined. It trusts the reader to feel the weight of what’s unsaid — about class, gender, love, and the small violences of ordinary neglect.
