'Macroecology' by James H. Brown

James H. Brown’s Macroecology was one of the formative books in establishing ecology at scale.
Instead of looking at a singular organism or the dynamics of one patch of habitat, he explores the patterns that emerge across species, continents and geological time. It was a massive step forward in treating ecology beyond isolated cases, suddenly incorporating huge datasets on body size, geographic range, energetics and extinction.
The result sits somewhere between ecology, biogeography and evolutionary theory. Published in 1995, it is now also interesting as a document from the period in which “macroecology” was becoming a distinct research program rather than simply a matter of scale. The University of Chicago Press still describes the book as proposing a research agenda joining ecology with systematics, evolutionary biology, paleobiology and biogeography.
