Published for a week-long exhibition of Doh Jeong Sook’s work in May 1996, this bilingual Korean–English catalogue records beautiful body of paintings, broad fields of ash, mauve, black and weathered earth tones are crossed by blunt white loops, partial structures, fragments of landscape and small inserted images. 

The accompanying essay describes Doh’s paintings as forms of “controlled consciousness,” attentive to the relationship between private feeling and the formal limits of the canvas. Repeated marks, empty boxes and awkwardly drawn lines produce a deliberate tension between order and release. Works such as The Stream of Consciousness and Lost April suggest an artist trying to give material shape to recollection without forcing it into narrative clarity. The book itself is a restrained and handsome object, with generously reproduced colour plates, Korean and English texts, and an artist’s statement printed in both languages.

A scarce piece of 1990s Korean exhibition ephemera, particularly appealing to readers and collectors interested in Korean modern and contemporary painting, women artists, abstraction, artist books and small-gallery catalogues.
