A soldier wakes each morning without memory.

Latro, wounded in battle in ancient Greece, cannot retain his past. He writes his experiences on a scroll so that when he wakes, he can piece together who he is. As he travels through the fractured landscape of the Persian Wars, he discovers that he can see and speak with the gods. It somewhat reminds me of that game, Outer Wilds, if you have played it. In tone and themes, not setting.

This strange historical novel is woven with myth, theology, and epistemological doubt.  The divine is present, but nothing seems to ever be fully explained. 

This is the first volume of the Latro sequence, a controlled, layered, and far more disorienting read than its classical setting suggests.
