This is one of those novels that people remember for the premise—young backpacker finds a hidden, “perfect” beach in Thailand—but it sticks because Garland understands how quickly utopia curdles once you have to live inside it.

The book tracks Richard drifting from observer to participant, and then into something closer to complicity, as the social rules of the island tighten and start to feel less like freedom and more like a collective delusion.

Not romantic about travel, not nostalgic about youth, and not especially interested in redemption. It’s about the psychology of escape and the idea that you can step outside the world and stay there. Perfect dare I say, beach read?
