'The President' by Miguel Ángel Asturias

First published in Spanish as El Señor Presidente, Miguel Ángel Asturias’s The President is one of the foundational Latin American novels of dictatorship.
It paints a dark, hallucinatory portrait of an unnamed authoritarian regime, where fear spreads through the streets like weather and power works less through law than rumour, paranoia, spectacle, and arbitrary cruelty.
Asturias, later awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature, blends political realism with dream logic, satire, mythic distortion, and sudden bursts of brutality. The result is not a neat historical novel so much as a pressure chamber: citizens, informers, lovers, officials, and enemies all caught inside the unstable imagination of tyranny. Good for readers of García Márquez, Bolaño, Kafka, Roberto Arlt, or anyone interested in the long literary prehistory of magical realism before it got turned into a tasteful export item.
