Often grouped alongside Borges, Bioy Casares and Silvina Ocampo, Denevi's fiction is less interested in magical spectacle than in moral distortion and psychological games.

The Redemption of the Cannibal Woman, translated from the Spanish by Alberto Manguel, brings together four novellas that move between noir, satire and philosophical fable. Denevi's narrators are frequently unreliable, not because they deliberately lie, but because they cannot perceive themselves clearly.

There is something of Kafka's bureaucratic unease, Patricia Highsmith's psychological precision and Borges' fascination with moral paradox, though Denevi's voice remains distinctly his own: dry, elegant and quietly vicious. Despite his significance in Argentine letters, Denevi remains surprisingly under-read in English, making this collection an excellent entry point into his work. Alberto Manguel's translation preserves the precision and wit of the original Spanish while introducing one of Latin America's sharpest literary ironists to an English-language audience.
