Description of 'The Aeneid' by Virgil

For more than two thousand years, The Aeneid has stood at the centre of the Western literary imagination.

Written in Latin during the first century BCE, Virgil's epic follows Aeneas as he flees the burning ruins of Troy and undertakes the long, divinely ordained journey that will culminate in the founding myth of Rome. Along the way the poem becomes far more than an adventure story: it is a meditation on exile, political violence, grief, destiny and the immense personal cost of history.

C. H. Sisson's celebrated translation preserves something of the poem's formal dignity without sacrificing clarity or momentum. Rather than forcing Virgil into archaic English, Sisson produces a version that feels both literary and remarkably readable, making this an excellent edition for first-time readers while remaining respected by classicists. The Everyman edition further includes an introduction, notes and critical apparatus, placing the poem in its historical and literary context.

Whether read as mythology, political literature or one of history's defining works of poetry, The Aeneid remains foundational. Dante, Milton, Joyce, Broch, Derek Walcott, Ursula K. Le Guin and countless others all write in its shadow.

Everyman edition (1998), featuring C. H. Sisson's translation, with introduction and notes. Paperback in very good condition, with light shelf wear to the covers, a firm binding and clean, unmarked pages throughout.
